The Architecture of Mind: Understanding the 8 Cognitive Functions

Beyond the 4-Letter Code

Individual personality is far more than just four letters. To truly understand MBTI, we must look at the 'Functional Stack' - the hierarchical order of how our brain processes information and makes decisions.

The 8 Cognitive Functions

Perceiving (p)

  • Se (Extraverted Sensing)
  • Si (Introverted Sensing)
  • Ne (Extraverted Intuition)
  • Ni (Introverted Intuition)

Judging (J)

  • Te (Extraverted Thinking)
  • Ti (Introverted Thinking)
  • Fe (Extraverted Feeling)
  • Fi (Introverted Feeling)

Dominant and Auxiliary: The Dynamic Pair

The first two functions in your stack define about 90% of your conscious personality. For example, an INTJ uses Ni (Introverted Intuition) to gather visions and Te (Extraverted Thinking) to execute them. This interaction creates the unique 'Architect' persona.

Why This Matters for Development

Understanding your 'Inferior Function' (the 4th one) is the key to managing stress. These functions often manifest as irrational behavior during 'Grip' experiences. By consciously developing our middle functions, we achieve psychological balance.
